The energetic, galloping La Chasse, from Nikolai Tcherepnin’s collection of six quartets for four horns, presents a vivid hunting scene filled with movement and vitality. Gilbert Vinter’s Hunter’s Moon offers a similarly evocative musical picture, drawing on a humorous tale of a tipsy huntsman who dreams of Diana, the goddess of the hunt.
By contrast, Eugène Bozza’s Sur les cimes creates an atmosphere of mystery. Its expansive, lyrical phrases lead the listener through a musical landscape inspired by lofty mountain peaks. Robert Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro moves from introspective melancholy to dazzling virtuosity. The composer’s wife, Clara Schumann, described the work as “brilliant, fresh and full of passion”. Each movement of Jean Françaix’s Divertimento reveals a different character of the horn: from the lively Introduzione, through the melodious Aria di cantabile, to the playful Canzonetta. The richness of its instrumental colours and the spirited dialogue between soloist and accompaniment give the work its distinctive charm. Paul Dukas’s Villanelle draws on the tradition of Italian pastoral songs while also recalling the sound and technique of the historical natural horn. Dukas, whose pupils included Olivier Messiaen and Maurice Duruflé, combined these references with the expressive and technical possibilities of the modern instrument. Trygve Madsen’s Sonata for Horn and Piano is distinguished by its wealth of thematic ideas. Its Classical sonata structure is expressed through a contemporary musical language marked by lyricism, energy and imaginative flair.
