Transcriptions and arrangements have played an important role in the development of chamber music for the bassoon, significantly expanding the instrument’s repertoire since the nineteenth century. Although its foundations are formed by original compositions, ranging from sonatas by Mozart, Weber and Saint-Saëns to works by Tansman and Kalivoda, adaptations of operatic and popular music have secured an equally lasting place within it.

This practice was already widespread in the early Romantic period. One notable example is François-René Gebauer’s arrangement of arias from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville for two bassoons, written only a few months after the opera’s premiere. In later years, the bassoon repertoire absorbed numerous widely recognised compositions, including Fauré’s Pavane, which the composer himself prepared in three different versions, and My Favorite Things, transformed by John Coltrane into a jazz standard. The remarkable variety of this chamber repertoire demonstrates the bassoon’s exceptional versatility: an instrument equally suited to lyrical expression, virtuoso display, ensemble dialogue and stylistic experimentation.
